The mass lantern release at the Mae Jo University in Chiang Mai, Thailand is one of the most amazing moments of my life, and I almost missed it. I had booked my trip around the Yi Peng festival of lights but at the time the lantern release date had not been announced, when it finally was weeks before it turned out the release was going to be on Saturday 16th November at 6pm. I was landing that very same day at 4.30pm, which excited and scared me at the same time. I had no idea if I could make it in time.

Once I landed the dream of seeing it started to drift, there was over an hour wait for a taxi and they wouldn’t take us to the area. I walked around all the car rental places but they had no cars available, but I have always thought of myself as lucky and this was one of those moments. A clerk at Sixt called a friend who ran a local car hire company and he had a car, within 15 minutes he had brought it to the airport and I was on my way. I drove straight toward the university and as it hit 6 I could see lanterns in the distance. I had missed it but I kept going anyway as I hoped I could see something. The main entrance to the university was closed so I followed the lanterns and miraculously found parking in someone’s house which was just around the corner from the event. I slowly walked through the crowds watching lanterns slowly rising the whole time. That was when I heard the count down and realisation struck me. I couldn’t believe I had made it just in the nick of time.

The atmosphere was incredible inside, the music, the people, and when the moment came to release I cried at the beauty of it all as I took picture after picture. I wanted to capture something unique and that very night I was given that as the wind blew all the lanterns just perfectly to create a star field in the sky. It’s a moment I will never forget.
